2012 Making American History Coin & Currency Set

This set includes: 1 2012 Silver American Eagle PF & 1 Series 2009 $5 Note

The 2012 American Eagle Silver Proof Coin not only honors the artistry, the design and our Nation's coins, it honors the heritage of coin production at the United states Mint at San Francisco.

The Series 2009 $5 Note commemorates the Bureau of Engraving and Printing's 150 years of service with a serial number beginning with "150," and bears the signature of the Treasurer of the United States Rosie Rios, and the San Francisco Bank designation.

On April 2, 1792, an Act of Congress established the first United States Mint in Philadelphia and U.S. legal tender coinage, authorizing the creation of gold, silver and copper coins ranging from a half cent to $10. The Act also called for design images emblematic of Liberty.

In 2012, the United States Mint completed its 220th year of service to our country, operating six facilities across the United States – each having unique functions – Headquarters in Washington, DC; production facilities in Philadelphia, PA; West Point, NY; Denver, CO; and San Francisco, CA; and the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox, KY. Several of the United states Mint facilities are also celebrating milestones of 75 years, in 2012: when the depository at Fort Knox opened; the facility at San Francisco was relocated and opened; and construction began at the West Point facility.

On July 11, 1862, an Act of Congress empowered the Secretary of the Treasury to purchase equipment and hire employees to engrave and print currency notes in the Department of the Treasury. This later became the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. From a small operation in the basement of the Treasury building, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing now occupies more than two-square blocks in downtown Washington, DC, and 100 acres outside Fort Worth, TX.

As we commemorate the historical achievements of these institutions that have been Making American History for than 150 years, this Making American History Coin and Currency Set embodies the hard work of American manufacturing of our coins and currency and the beauty and quality of their craftsmanship that showcase America’s leading design and manufacturing processes. Proudly made in America, United States coins and currency exhibit the strength, security, confidence and excellence that are the hallmarks of our nation.
